James Sunderland - James Sunderland is a young man who is grieving over the loss of his wife just three years ago. She died of a disease, he explains. However, he recieves a letter titled "Mary". In this letter is a message from his late wife, Mary, to meet her in their "Special Place". James assumes this is Silent Hill, by the lake. He arrives at Silent Hill and meets an unsual character names Angela Orocso who claims she is too searching for someone in the town of Silent Hill. After a while James encounters an usual monster like creature. More start to appear and strange things start happening. Is James insane? Or is something strange going on around him...?
Maria - Is a woman who James meets at the Park on the lake while looking for his wife, Mary. He believed this was their "special place". She striking resembles Mary, having a very similar name and the only difference being her hair and clothes. This is no coincidence. During the course of the game, Maria is kileld multiple times, but appears at another location as James moves on. In the end, James realises what Maria really is; Lust and Selfish desire. Depending on your actions during the game, and the ending you aquire, Maria either turns into a demon and you kill her, or "Mary" turns into a demon, you kill her and James leaves with Maria, only to find she will suffer the same fate as his wife. Maria is a playable character in the Sub-scenario "Born from a wish". Maria wakes up in an apartment confused of whats going on, trying to decide if she should just die, or fight for her life. As you play, it is apparent that Maria is just a made-up creature, something James has imagined up. (Hence "Born from a Wish" and her many deaths)
Laura - Laura is a selfish, stuck up little girl who is very rude and irritating. However, James can't let a little girl run around the horrifying town of Silent Hill alone, so he makes it his duty to find her. (Although, somewhat influenced by Maria) Eventually James learns that Laura was friends with his wife, Mary, when they were in Hosptial. Laura claims it was only one year ago...James at first doesnt believe it. Mary died 3 years ago, didnt she...? This starts to raise questions. A strange thing about Laura is, she claims that she sees none of the monsters in Silent Hill. To her, perhaps, it is just a deserted creepy town with nothing hiding in the darkness. It is speculated that she is just an innocent girl, and has not been called to Silent Hill because of a crime, which is usually the case. She leaves Silent Hill in the end either with, or without James, depending on the ending you recieve. Strangely, she speaks the Eddie very unfriendly calling him a "Gutless Fatso". Judging by Eddies doings in the past, he would have killed her. But for some reason does not. Perhaps he feels as thought he can releate to her, as he has quite a childish metality.
Angela Orosco - Is a young woman, roughly a nineteen year old girl James meets in the cemetary of Silent Hill. Very little information is known about her, but only that she is looking for her mother, has a brother and a father. Who or what they might be is later hinted at... Her Father, Thomas, repeatedly raped and abused Angela. Clues throughout the game imply that her mother had convinced her that she was a bad person and she deserved to be raped and abused by her Father. Angela eventually stabbed her father multiple times in the neck with a kitchen knife and ran away from home. When James first meets Angela she seems as thought nothing has happened before their meeting and that her being abused and killing her father has no effected her, or even happened. (Much like James..?) James is releated to Anglea in the sense that they share a similar reason for being in Silent Hill. Depending on the ending you get, this is explained further.
Eddie Dombrowski - Is an unusual character James meets in Blue Creek Apartments in the town. As you get further through the game, you soon realise that Eddie is acting a little strange. You eventually discover that after a life of torment about his weight, appearance or intellegence he snaps and shoots a man and his dog, then running away to Silent hill. He believes that looks, intellegence, and abilities are all trival, as "It's all the same once you're dead". In the end, James tells eddie that you can just kill someone because of what they might have said, but Eddie takes it the wrong way and believes James is against him like "everyone else", so he threatens to kill James. Eddie is a perfect example of bottled up anger without an emotional outlet.
Ernest Baldwin - A man who Maria enounters during Born From a Wish in a mansion of West Soth Vale district. He is never seen physically, but only pulls a door shut and refuses to come out when questioned by Maria. He seems quite a cold man who seems to prefer the monsters because he isnt fond of people. This leads us to believe that he is either a living monster (Like Lennoard Wolf of Silent Hill 3) or, already dead. He is meant to find peace when he is giving a ingredient which can be used in a ritual to bring back his dead daughter, Amy. (Linked to the rebirth ending?)
