Silent Hill Origins Creatures and Monsters
All of the monsters in this section have no official names as of yet, so we will
name them according to their appearance, characteristics or previous
appearances.
Ariel

Ariels are puppets that appear in the Artaud Theater. They hang upside down
from the ceiling and attack by grabbing and choking Travis Grady. Attacking one
will result in knocking it down, where it will then stand on its hands and begin
to kick instead. As they are made from fragile porcelain they are quite weak,
but they can be tricky when dealt with in numbers or in confined spaces.
Symbolism: The name "Ariel" is derived from the servant character of the same
name from William Shakespeare's The Tempest which Alessa saw at the Artaud
Theater.
StrategyAriels: often work in pairs or threes. They can be easily avoided by
turning off the flashlight, but beware of making loud noises in their presence.
However, they can still be difficult to avoid in narrow corridors. After being
struck down from the ceiling, they are stunned for a few moments, and completely
defenseless. These moments are the best opportunity to kill them with a
finishing move, crushing them easily.
Caliban

The Caliban is based on a costumed character from a play that Alessa
Gillespie once attended in the Artaud Theater. According to the play's program,
the costume was designed by taking "a native buffalo spirit, fusing it with the
stark, iconic images seen in the ancient local cult of Valtiel." The costume
terrified Alessa, and became the basis for the monster's existence.
The monster has only two attacks, like the bosses fought previously in the game.
It has a ground pounding attack, where it raises both of its hind legs and then
moves them away from its front portion. It also has a lunging attack, which it
will perform after swaying back slightly. If it makes any sudden movements,
staying away from it is Travis Grady's best bet. The best way to defeat this
boss quickly is with a firearm, such as the shotgun.
Symbolism: "Caliban" comes from William Shakespeare's "The Tempest". Alessa,
with her fear of dogs, was scared by this dog-like character while she watched
the play at Artaud Theater.
Faceless Nurse

Faceless Nurses appear in Silent Hill: Origins. They are similar to the
Bubble Head Nurse in appearance, though they wear slightly different clothing
and, like the name suggests, lack any kind of face.
Character: While in Alchemilla Hospital they appear somewhat lighter than the
nurses in Cedar Grove Sanitarium. The nurses in the sanitarium are greener in
color, like they are rotting. Nurses are armed with scalpels and syringes much
like a normal nurse would carry. They have a weak forward slash and grappling
move that can damage you sufficently.
Symbolism: Travis Grady's sexual anxiety, may also symbolize the nurses that
treated him during his hospitalization. Another possible representation is of
how Travis felt about being taken away from his mother by the hospital staff.
Strategy: Faceless nurses are quite slow-moving creatures and cannot see you if
the flashlight is off, and can easily be beaten with any kind of melee weapon or
even bare hands. However, it may try to grab you. If one does, throw her away,
or you'll be pierced by a long rusty needle.
Area: Alchemilla Hospital
Cedar Grove Sanitarium
Nurse
The nurse is a common enemy in the hospital, as you would imagine. They have
been seen using various weapons including scapels and syringes. They're standard
enemies with standard attack power that can be beaten to death or have a TV
smashed over their head quite easily.
Whether or not this "green" nurse is a different type or just the same nurse
with a different colour or in an area with different lighting is unclear.
However, it appears to have a slightly different colour outfit as well as the
face.
Purple Zombie (SCRAPPED)
This particular monster made its first apperance in the debut trailer for Silent
Hill: Origins at E3 in 2006. However, it wasn't shown very clearly. It wasn't
until Leipzig that year that fans got a glimpse of what we could expect in terms
of game play which included this terrible monster. Good news game in April 07
though, the production was moved to Climax UK and this monster was scrapped
completely. Good times.
Hanging Monster
Only one video of this monster as been shown, and that was pre-redesign so it is
uncertain if this monster will appear in the final game. However, it is large
flat monster which hangs on meat hooks in the butchers.
??? Monster
This monster is so strange and unusual its very difficult to decribe. It seems
to mainly used its hind legs to move and appears to lie on its face and not use
its front legs. It attacks by using its powerful hind legs to launch its large
body into the enemy. From its appearance it has been dubbed the "Turkey"
Monster.
Dog (?) Monster
Another Similar monster to the "Turkey" Monster which appears to behave in the
same way other than it is much much larger and resembles a dog.
Helen Grady

Helen Grady is a character from Silent Hill: Origins, whereas the Memory of
Helen Grady is the demonic manifestation of her memory, found in the same game.
Having presumably died at some point prior to Silent Hill: Origins, Travis Grady
encounters the remnants of his mother while exploring the depths of Silent
Hill's Cedar Grove Sanitarium.
Helen GradyThe mother of Travis and wife of Richard Grady, she attempted to kill
both herself and Travis during his childhood. When police asked her why she
would do such a thing, she claimed that the "people in the mirrors" told her to
kill the "devil child." Helen was committed to Cedar Grove Sanitarium shortly
after the incident. On numerous occasions, when Richard would visit, she would
become extremely violent, demanding to see her son. This lead Richard to telling
Travis that his mother had died, to keep his son away from the mother's
terrifying grip. During the time of her institutionalization, she also may have
met Dahlia Gillespie. Helen kept going on about the "people in the mirrors" as
doctors asked questions in order to check her mental state. She claimed (as
heard in a cutscene) that she could go back and forth between worlds as much as
she pleased and there wasn't a thing the doctors could do about it. As time
passed, however, she gained full knowledge of her actions and even seemed proud
of her attempt on Travis' life.
As Travis explores Cedar Grove Sanitarium, secrets are discovered and memories
flood back to Travis.
Helen is voiced by Laurence Bouvard.
The Memory of Helen Grady
The Memory of Helen GradyThe Memory of Helen Grady appears, not as Travis
remembers his mother, but rather as a monstrous form, barely identifiable as a
woman and trapped in an iron cage of a dress. Her body appears to be wrapped in
cloth, much like a mummified corpse. She is a dull, grayish green color and
appears to be covered in grime. Her mouth is permanently held open wide as if
she is screaming, and she has spikes upon her feet.
She can be found in her Cedar Grove Sanitarium room in the Female Seclusion
ward.
CharacterThe battle begins in Female Seclusion (you need Jocasta's Artifact to
access it), in the last ward. She fights mainly by floating around the room,
attempting to spike Travis with her feet. She can perform a grapple attack that
is similar to the Flesh Lips from Silent Hill 2. She can also spew clouds of
black gas that have better range than her primary physical attacks. She moves a
little faster than normal and can be defeated in the same way as defeating
Pyramid Head in Silent Hill 2; running from corner to corner until the boss is
vanquished.
SymbolismThis creature is representative of Travis's memory of his mother. Her
mouth is frozen open in a scream, representing her want of her son as well as
the change in her personality. Her mummified/caged state represents her stay in
Cedar Grove Sanitarium, being constantly under watch and caged up, unable to see
her family or be free.

Straight-Jacket

The Straight-Jacket is a shambling creature wrapped in flesh, appearing in
Silent Hill: Origins. It twitches violently and appears as if it is trying to
break free of its flesh.
Character: They are nearly identical to the Lying Figures seen in Silent Hill 2,
but these creatures behave quite differently, such as spewing balls of acid
rather than spraying it. If they spot you, they will run towards Travis Grady
and continue to chase him until you enter another room/building, or kill them.
Their numbers can rise rapidly if the player does not react quickly. They will
jump up and wrap their legs around Travis, trying to crush the air out of his
lungs. If the player fails to successfully throw off the creature, it will spew
acid into Travis' face.
The Lying Figure appears to be the first boss of the game, or the ending boss in
the Silent Hill: Origins demo. As before in Silent Hill 2 these creatures have
the ability to spit acid as well as physcially hit you.
The Straight-Jacket serves as a semi-boss near the ending portion of Alchemilla
Hospital and, like the nurses, is capable of using a grappling move. They can
also be found in Artaud Theater, more bloodied than usual.
Symbolism: It represents Travis' mother's stay in Cedar Grove Sanitarium and his
natural fear and disgust for madmen therefore.

The Butcher

A monster known as The Butcher appears in Silent Hill: Origins as a major
antagonist towards Travis Grady. The Butcher is a humanoid creature much like
Pyramid Head in design, behavior, and function. He's a well-built humanoid with
a butcher's apron, which is spattered in blood. He also wears a series of metal
plates that cover the left half of his face and left shoulder. His trademark
weapon is a slightly oversized meat cleaver called the Great Cleaver. The other
half of his face is fairly empty, and resembles that of Valtiel.
The Butcher behaves much like Pyramid Head does, with his relentless pursuit of
the protagonist and frequent murder and slaughtering of various monsters.
However, unlike Pyramid Head, The Butcher does not display any of the former's
sexual characteristics. Also, whereas Pyramid Head's movement is very jerky and
almost twitchy in nature, The Butcher's movements are always fluid and
controlled, giving him a much more calm and focused appearance than the other
"Bogeyman"-type monster.
Travis meets The Butcher several times throughout his journey to Silent Hill.
The first encounter occurs when Travis finds him marching down a hallway, only
to stop and grab a nearby Faceless Nurse, before stabbing her in the belly with
his cleaver and then rending her in half before dropping her and skulking away.
While in the maintenance tunnel in the Riverside Motel, Travis can look through
a peephole into room 503, a room he was standing in only moments ago, in which
he will see The Butcher standing next to the bed. Coincidentally, the room the
Butcher is in is filled with both photography and anatomy artwork of the Butcher
and other monsters.
In their second encounter, Travis meets The Butcher in the Riverside Motel's
kitchen, where he is slowly slaughtering a Two-Back creature. Battle quickly
ensues after this encounter, where Travis is forced to "kill" him by slamming
his own cleaver into his chest. It is not known if The Butcher is truly dead, or
has the same sort of recuperative capabilities as Pyramid Head does.
Butcher killing a nurseCharacterThe Butcher's cleaver is similar to Pyramid
Head's Great Knife, because it is heavy and therefore is dragged along the
ground, making a screeching sound. Because of this The Butcher can be heard
somewhere near the Lumberyard, as Travis travels to the theater, making it
possible to believe that the The Butcher is just a few steps ahead of Travis.
Fortunately, there is no encounter with him at this point.
The Butcher attacks with his cleaver, constantly marching towards Travis with
murderous intent. The table in the middle of the battle room leaves little room
to maneuver, but makes it easier to run away from him. Despite the fact that
Travis runs faster than The Butcher, the monster is still quicker than most
creatures, and can close distance on him surprisingly quick if Travis isn't
careful. The Butcher also swings with surprising speed and does a great deal of
damage, making melee confrontation inadvisable at best. Firearms are the best
way to take him down, specifically the shotgun.
Death Scene If Travis fails to escape from the Butcher's grasp, he'll be cut and
impaled by the Butcher's cleaver.
SymbolismThe Butcher represents cruelty and sacrifice, particularly that of The
Order. His calm, emotionless torturing and slaughtering of other monsters rings
of The Order's tendency to murder and sacrifice human life for their worship.
The Butcher also represents Travis's stifled inner rage.

The Carrion
The Carrion is an enemy in Silent Hill: Origins. They resemble cows with
stubbed legs and no skin. They generally are a dark red/fleshy color and hang
their tongues out of their mouths. They move as if their upper spines are
broken, slowly pushing itself with its back legs to get around. The Carrion is
the second creature that Travis Grady encounters in Silent Hill in a random
encounter in the streets. They make noises that resemble a sick animal.
CharacterCarrion are unpredictable and have amazing range in attack. Their only
attack is a leaping body slam, which does heavy damage and can kill if Travis
doesn't watch his health. Recommended fighting technique is either any gun or
the gauntlets. It is also recommended to simply run, because they attack anytime
so long as they are facing Travis and he is within "range" which can be a number
of feet. They are dangerous in packs. Attacking with a melee weapon requires
stealth and to catch the creature from the side or the back, and dodging,
because it turns around quickly.
There are larger versions of this creature encountered after the Theatre level.
They lack the leaping attack of their smaller brethren, instead raising
themselves on their hind legs and slamming their bulk on the ground causing huge
damage. They are generally less dangerous because they move slower and can be
gunned down before they reach you.
Symbolism: Carrion represent Travis' guilt for running over animals while
driving his truck.

The Remnant

The Remnant is an enemy from Silent Hill: Origins. It takes on the form of a
floating, black harness with a shadow that looks like a woman's form.
Character: It will deal heavy successive damage if allowed, by swinging forward
in quick overhead lunges. The best way to deal with these enemies is from afar
with firearms, or by timed attacks with a blunt weapon, and stepping back as it
swings forward. Usually just avoiding it by running past with the flashlight off
is the best bet, as later on they appear in clumps of twos and threes.
Fortunately, it only appears in the Cedar Grove Sanitarium.
Strategy: When the Remnants are in a straight ray of light, they can be seen as
black female shadows on walls or floor behind their iron bondages, so it is
difficult to notice them. However, they immediately will attack. It's better to
be avoided, because the Remnant is not an enemy to be taken lightly. Though more
risky, a preferrable tactic would be not to switch the light on in their
presence. In darkness, Travis will be able to sneak past the Remnant, or shoot
it without being counter-attacked (six handgun shots is more than enough) or
throw something heavy at it, killing the monster instantly. A dying Remnant
emits a modified heart-piercing cry, full of anguish.
Symbolism: Remnants probably symbolize Travis Grady's fear of the other patients
of the sanitarium when sneaking in to see his mother. Their shadows appear
feminine because of his mother being located in the female dorm.

Two-Back

Two-Back is one of the strongest non-boss monsters in Silent Hill: Origins.
It appears in the Riverside Motel in several rooms and outside in both worlds.
edit Character Two-Back has the appearance of a mutilated human-like creature
with its lower front fused into the lower back of a large monstrous creature. The
appearance suggests the two mutilated creatures are participating in a sexual
act. It attacks by spitting acid, or ramming into Travis Grady. It may also grab
him, which is quite powerful as it spews acid on Travis' face when it does this.
It's appearance is similar to that of the Siam.
edit Symbolism The Two-Back represents Travis' sexual deprivation as a lone
trucker. Among the other Shakespeare references in the game, Othello is also
referenced. In the play, Iago describes Desdemona's sexual relationship with
Othello by stating that they are "making the beast with two backs."
The Demon

The Demon is the final boss in Silent Hill: Origins. It is not named in the
game or in any other official source, but popular fan names include Flauros and
Alessa's Dream. It's design is that of a stereotypical demonic entity.
edit Character
The DemonThe Demon is given little characterization, beyond its savagery in
battle. After Travis Grady completes the Flauros, he intervenes on a ritual
being conducted by The Order within the Green Lion Antiques shop. After being
sedated by Michael Kaufmann, Travis enters a nightmare-like state where he is
forced to battle The Demon, who may have been held prisoner within the Flauros.
Dahlia Gillespie believes the Demon, as long as it remains caged within the
Flauros, is capable of amplifying Alessa Gillespie's psychic abilities.
edit StrategyThe Demon is quite powerful and should not be taken lightly. It
attacks with highly powerful physical moves and demonic magic. It will try to
slash at you when you are close and follow you if you run. The beast can open up
its chest for a powerful, beam-like move and also call upon a damaging, flaming
rain. Dodge its attacks carefully and heal when needed. It's best to use your
most hard-hitting firearms against it.
edit SymbolismIt may represent The Order's idea, as a collective, of what God
could look like. It may also be Alessa's fear of what God will turn out to be,
or it could represent Travis Grady's general perception of The Order and it
members.
According to Silent Hill, and Silent Hill 3, Dahlia has called Alessa the demon,
this creature might be the manifestation of what Dahlia thinks or sees of Alessa.
